Like searching for the holy grail, trying to find the perfect swing is an impossible task. What I've found from taking several lessons, purchasing numerous training aids, and struggling season after season is that we're all trying to mimic the pros. When in reality my natural golf swing will never be the same as Tiger woods. I am just not at his level, so why am I trying to learn similar golf swing mechanics to him?

Golf Stance And Its Physical Requirements
By: Mike Pederson
Golf stance is one of the most ignored terms and issues in the golf swing and yet the golf stance dictates the success of every golf swing you make.
When golfers think of golf stance, they dont realize how hard it is to maintain over 18 holes (four and a half hours). Just take a look at the position your body is in during your set up. There are many physical issues taking place, even though it is a static position at the start.
Lets go over the physical requirements of the golf stance right now.
Bend At Hips To Address Golf Ball
To achieve this initial movement takes strength and flexibility in not only the lower back, but the hamstrings and core muscle groups. If these muscle groups are limited, you will have a very difficult time achieving this simple move.
Flex In The Knees
A combination of bending at the hips and knees allows you to get to the ball. The shorter the club, the more the bend at both the hips and knees. If your quadriceps are weak, you will have a very difficult time maintaining the proper knee flex therefore causing you to create in improper golf stanceresulting in mishits and lack of distance.
Ankle Flexion
Take a look at the ankle joint of any golfer. It is definitely bent (flexed) to accommodate the bending of the knees and hips. If your calf muscles are weak/or tight, you will find it very uncomfortable to stay down at the ball. I see so many golfers with tight calf muscles and they never even knew it.
Spine Extension (Erectness)
This is a BIGGY! How many times have you seen the golfer (maybe even you) in his/her golf stance with the dread camels back? This is very common among older golfers and is a KILLER in the golf swing. I could (and probably will) write a complete article on this physical limitation. But the bottom line is a rounded (weak) upper spine will dramatically hinder your ability to make a full backswing. Result: very short drives and a lot of embarrassment.
I just briefly covered just a couple of physical requirements of the golf stance, but I hope you know see the importance of addressing your physical limitations to achieve the end result.
Longer drives, lower scores and beating the pants off your golfing buddies! Pay more attention to your golf stance!

Hints About Hybrid Golf Clubs
The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag.

Assuming the texture of the sand is similar, and the ball is not plugged, the technique for hitting out of a greenside bunker remains the same for shots up to 30 yards (27m). The key to making this shot is hitting the sand about 1 to 2 inches behind the ball, throwing the sand forward with the ball. For longer shots the only thing that changes is the swing's length. Rhythm and tempo remain the same.

Low-Cost Alternatives
If golf sounds like a great idea, the sticking point to getting started can all too often be cost. After all, you need clubs, balls, tees, and in the case of many clubs a strict dress code must be adhered to that makes entry into the sport appear prohibitive. However, it is essential that such enthusiasm should be nurtured by means of the opportunities afforded by low-cost alternatives. So why not start out by identifying the location of the local driving range, or a municipal course run by the council that will be relatively cheap in terms both of green fees and the hire of clubs.

Golf Etiquette
By: Jeff Austin
The rulebook has a lot in it that you should know, but you dont have to memorize it, keep a copy in your golf bag and your will always be ready.
The way you should act on a golf course however, are things that you must know and observe.
Golf is special because of the many customs including good sportsmanship that go with the game.
Here are some of the most important ones you need to observe while on the green:
*Dont stand where a person putting can see you or your shadow
*No noise making, no opening and closing your Velcro glove or jingle the change in your pocket, and NEVER accidentally cough during someones shot.
*Dont applaud a miss even if it means you or your team now have an advantage, this is extremely rude.
*Always mark you ball, use a ball mark (given away in pro shops) a coin or rock are also acceptable, anything that doesnt move. Put it behind the ball on the extension of your target line.
Ask a player whose line is on your mark if he would like it moved and which way.
Put the heel of your putter next to the mark and place the mark just outside the toe. When the player is finished, move your mark back, if you forget it is a penalty.
*Watch where you walk on the green, know where the balls are and dont walk on their line or it extension on the far side of the hole.
*Walk well around the hole unless you are tapping a ball in or picking it up out of the cup.
*Dont drag your feet on the green, it damages the grass and causes spike marks that cant be repaired until you have finished putting.
*It is against the rules to give advice, except to your partner, so be careful what you say after you have holed out.
*Dont be a slowpoke, you dont have to rush but shouldnt take to long either.

Finding Your Putters Sweet Spot
By: Jeff Austin
The sweet spot is the particular spot that every golf club has, where it hits with pure impact. The shot feels good, looks good and gives the best results.
The sweet spot is a small spot around your clubs center of gravity, when you hit a ball with the sweet spot it goes exactly where you want it to go because the head doesnt move out of alignment with the target.
Statistics show that if you miss the sweet spot by as little as a quarter of an inch you will miss every putt by at least eight feet, the sweet spot is that important to your ability to putt.
On most putters the sweet spot is marked by a line or arrow that has been cut into the topline or the part of the putter you see when you are addressing the ball.
It is not uncommon for this factory mark to be off by a little, so find the sweet spot for yourself and mark it properly.
To find the sweet spot on your putter, hold the putter lightly out in front of you by the thumb and forefinger and allow it to swing easily, hold it in the same position it would be in if you were putting, now tilt the shaft until the bottom of the putter is parallel to the ground.
Using the eraser end of a pencil or some other pointed object, gently tap the putterface until you find the one spot that causes the head to swing back and forth without any twisting of the face, no wobbling and with little or no vibration.
You have found your putters sweet spot; mark it well for reference during play. Making a grove in the top of the putter is one way to mark it; you may want to fill the groove with white paint so it is easier to see.

Burton Golf Bags
An offset shaft or hosel on a putter is generally a good thing for a recreational golfer (and many pros, too). Offset helps the golfer line up with his or her forward eye over the ball, and with a good line of sight. Offset also helps keep the hands ahead of the ball when the putt is struck, which is a putting fundamental. Many putt great without offset, so it's one more thing that comes down to feel.

Don't grip the club too tightly. A tight grip inhibits a smooth swing and follow-though. Also, keep the grips on your clubs in good condition. Worn grips force you to hold the club too tightly. Replace the grips on your clubs as they get worn and smooth. When first learning the grip, keep a club around the house and practice gripping and regripping the club a few minutes each day. Remember to keep fingers secure and arms relaxed.

Proper Sequence Is Key
There are many elements of impact that must come together to produce consistency, but the key lies in the sequence. From the top of the backswing, the legs and hips must initiate the downswing by moving toward the target, past their original position at address. This creates the proper tilt in the shoulders that allows the right arm to remain flexed at impact, while the left wrist becomes flat. Basically, a proper impact position is the result of a proper sequence of movements.

Neutral = Straight
There are two key alignments to strive for at the top of the swing that will make hitting fairways much easier. The most important of the two is the clubface position, which should be square (the leading edge basically is parallel to the left arm). Learning this position will remove the need to compensate on the downswing with the hands. Positioning the club parallel to the target line is also extremely important.

Assisted Training Schemes
In terms of lessons, the financial aspect again can be a constraining factor. However, it is worth approaching the council about assisted training schemes, some of which are run in conjunction with golfing associations. For example, the English Golf Union (www.englishgolfunion.org), the national amateur governing body, launched a Get Into Golf initiative aimed at introducing more people to the sport regardless of age, background or gender, and together with the English Ladies' Golf Association organised a programme of free taster sessions, including hire of clubs, at participating venues across the country to do just that. Such initiatives mean that even if an individual does not have the money, they are still capable of participating and enjoying the game by making a much more important investment, namely the time to develop their skills and hopefully spread the word about the benefits of taking up the game.

In my 28 years of teaching students of all levels, I have found that making the needed adjustments concerning grip type and grip size gives you the best chance of realizing improvement very quickly. If the grip is too small and slippery, you will tend to hold on much too tight, creating a host of swing problems. If using what are considered standard size grips by most manufacturers, chances are their grips are too small. Be on the lookout for this ongoing potential for trouble.
